Are you ready to take a journey back to a bygone era of railroading? Then make plans to join this tour and visit the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in northwest Indiana. Situated near the former junction of the Erie, PRR, C&O, and NYC in historic North Judson, The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum offers you the unique opportunity to become immersed in the railroad history of northwest Indiana. You will have a unique opportunity to experience the sights, sounds and smells of railroading during its heydays.
Visit the museum or take train ride and enjoy the sites and sounds of rural life while traveling through the farmland of Northwest Indiana.
You will travel from the depot in North Judson across the Kankakee River bridge at English Lake and then onto LaCrosse, Indiana. While on the train, you will enjoy a box lunch while taking in the rural farm country of Starke and southern LaPorte Counties. You will see wildflowers, birds, butterflies, wildlife and a variety of Indiana crops are visible from the train.
Once in LaCrosse, you will disembark while the locomotive turns on the wye. From there, you will re board the train for the return leg to North Judson and the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. The trip takes about 2 hours and the round-trip distance is 20 miles.
After the train excursion, you will be able to explore the quaint depot filled with photos and artifacts, walk the grounds and inspect various pieces of equipment on display and under restoration. Become amazed at the sheer size of the massive C&O No. 2789 steam locomotive. Also, check out the progress on Grasselli Tower or visit the back shop where engineers perform repairs on the museum’s equipment. While you're trackside, look skywards to observe several types of operating wayside signals.
