LCCA 2010 Convention Daily News Report - Wednesday, July 28, 2010
Today’s train tour today was an excursion run aboard the Leadville Colorado & Southern RR in Leadville, CO—11,000+ feet up in the Rocky Mountains. The other tour was a trip by motor coach to Frontier Days in Cheyenne, WY.
At the host hotel, the all-night work by the layout assembly crew created magic. The fabulous Lionel layout was ready for operation when a TV crew from TV/9 in Denver arrived and produced three live segments about the Lionel layout for their morning news program, as well as a fourth TV segment for news use later in the day. The TV crew left the hotel about 9 a.m. and, within half an hour, visitors started arriving to view the layout in action, saying, “We saw it on TV!”
The SLX&CK railroad started daily operation, too, so visitors saw two different examples of model railroading.
The First Time Attendees’ Reception was held in the hotel that evening. It’s the club’s way of welcoming members coming to an LCCA Convention for the first time.
The diesel locomotive of the Leadville Colorado & Southern RR is adapted to high altitude running and was a reliable workhorse for our excursion in the high Rockies.
The depot at Leadville is a historic structure and the home of the LC&S.
Club members donned jackets for a train ride in the crisp, clear mountain air.
